The existing site was a cornfield that was, on average, 6'-0" below the level of the two streets that bordered it. In order to expedite the construction schedule, Legat Architects issued a sitework package for bidding while still designing the building. This allowed for the sitework construction to take place during the fall. When the general contractor was ready to begin construction, the site was already prepared.

At the beginning of design, several parameters were established by the Building Committee that were incorporated into the project. First, no flat roofs were to be used. This led to the use of low sloped standing seam metal roofs. Second, the budget was $ 86.00/s.f. for base bid items. The simple volumes of the building, and the repetitive classroom wings resulted in a base bid of $ 81.00/s.f.. Including the alternate bid items accepted by the Owner, the total building cost was $87.93/s.f..

The resulting building design, while addressing the needs established by the building committee, responds to the Middle School concept.

Along with innovations in teaching methods, the building is completely designed and wired for technology. The technology lab has separate work stations teaching everything from engine repair to stop-motion animation. Each classroom has data and power outlets for six computers per room, and all other offices and teaching spaces have at least one data and power outlet. The entire building is networked both internally and to the other buildings in the district.
