The design
solution was to evoke a totally fresh, new look and feel,
as well as provide for increased public access for school
events. The resulting 90,248 square-foot addition features
17 new classrooms, 7 new science rooms, a new gymnasium seating
1500, locker room facilities, a new band room, and an expanded
cafeteria and kitchen. Transition from old to new was created
through a glass-enclosed, exposed public lobby.
Alterations
included conversion of the existing gymnasium into a new,
state-of-the-art library/media center with a teacher preparatory
area on the mezzanine. Also prominent in the alterations work
was the removal and replacement of the window-wall system
and failing exterior masonry over the majority of the existing
building.
Site work
included a new master plan for all athletic fields, a new
all-weather track, bleachers and tennis courts.
Access
to the site and the need for additional parking was resolved
with a new loop road approach to the school. As is important
with any educational facility, computer technology is incorporated
throughout the design, evidenced by an electronic media-retrieval
system, a district-wide area computer network, and a new communications
system
