When the Kingscott team
went to work planning Dexter High School in Dexter, Michigan, they
pushed for maximum flexibility to accommodate current and future
curricula. The end result is a building that can be academically
organized in multiple ways.
- Vertically
- Horizontally
- Departmentally
- Grade-Based
- Team-Based
- School-within-a-School
Further, partition walls
between classrooms open to support team teaching. Classroom groups
of eight also allow for future reorganization. A structural steel
frame and drywall construction will facilitate any building reorganization.
Other features include
a courtyard and amphitheater created by the dramatic 30 degree angle
between the academic wing and the public portion of the building.
The media center anchors both at the angle's apex.
Recognizing the value
of natural light designers used generous windows throughout the
building, which also visually connect spaces to simplify way finding
in the 300,000+ square foot facility.
To meet the district's
desire to reduce the visual impact of such a large facility on the
surrounding neighborhoods, designers located the building at the
lowest corner and farthest point of the 96 acre site. As a result,
classrooms face lush woods while the athletic fields front the facility
for easy access.
